Avees Puttu Restaurant – One of the items in my to-do-list for my summer vacation in Kerala was to taste traditional and authentic kuttanadan food. Even though kuttanadan flavours are widely marketed, my possible chances for tasting the same were very limited since I belong to the extreme south of Kerala, where tastes are totally different.. For this, I avoided my frequently travelled route and tried the MC road to reach my destination in Mysore.
Location – Avees Puttu Alleppey
To reach the destination,I took a turn at Perunna, a place hardly 2 kms just before Changanassery to enter the National Highway… I still don’t know the name of the road but road was very good.I will never forget this journey, because of the backwaters on either side of the road… While hunting for a place to have breakfast, i chanced upon this restaurant.. more than the place, its name and it’s logo attracted me first… a traditional puttu maker…
Experience Inside Avees Puttu House
I entered the place thinking that I will be served only puttu, but to my surprise they had an elaborate menu..Puttu, Idiyappam, and Palappam …I think they are specialising in making dishes out of powdered rice..I tried three varieties of puttu with three different side dishes.. white puttu with egg curry, puncha puttu (made out of red raw rice flour) with kadala curry and wheat puttu with beef curry… all were very tasty..in fact, all the three puttu varieties were very soft.. They welcome their customers with their traditional chukku kappi …

The restaurant, Avees Puttu house Alappuzha, is a very good drive-in restaurant for any number of crowd..it is set up on the backdrop of the backwaters of Alappuzha.. The inner ambience is very good..you feel that as if you are in a Chundan vallam..The restaurant is providing a good view of the lake outside while you enjoy your food inside..Parking won’t be a problem since they are providing enough place at the entrance itself..
Avees is dealing with a variety packaged powders..like puttu podi (powder), idiyappam podi, appam podi, chammanthi podi, avalose podi, chilly, turmeric, coriander powder, etc… I saw their customers were carrying these powder packets while leaving the restaurant…i also wanted to try few items from there once I am back home..so I bought a packet of puncha puttu podi and a pkt of avalose podi.. i feel that they have reasonably priced their product..4 kg pkt for Rs. 290 and for the 500 gms of avalose podi Rs. 100 only..
Try to visit the Avees Puttu Restaurant if you happened to travel by the same route…Please don’t go if your taste buds are in favour of north Indian flavours..this place is for those who want to enjoy the traditional kuttanadan dishes…purely kerala food…
