Traveling to Guangzhou China

Guangzhou Airport – Baiyun International Airport

Baiyun International Airport is a very big airport with best facilities and duty free shops. The airport has 2 terminals.

China Visa for Indians

Baiyun International Airport

You need to get a visa as per your requirement before you travel. There are options based on the purpose of your travel like tourism, business, etc

I traveled from Maldives to Singapore and then from Singapore to Guangzuah on Singapore Airlines. The flying time was about 8 hours and the travel was during night time.

Frisked by the Chinese Security

I was almost frisked by the Chinese security department. One person came to me and took my passport, boarding card, etc and took photocopies and asked me few questions like why am I coming, show me the return ticket, is it my first time visit to China and so on. He returned the Passport and left. I was still in the queue for the immigration clearance that again a senior lady officer with the same person came and told me to come with them. She again checked my Passport and told me sorry, and let me go, After me, she took 3 other Indian passport holders. I have no complaints, this happens in every country and they were doing their job.

This is just to inform you, that this could happen to you, don’t get worried. Most of the passengers in the queue were Chinese / Singapore nationalities and few Indians only.

Guangzuah – Canton Fair and other trade opportunities

Guangzuah is not a big tourist destination but a big trade centre. You will find more of business people traveling to this city, majority of them from China itself. Unlike other international fairs like Medica, Arab Health, the buyers and sellers are more from China. If you are looking to source products manufactured in China, then Canton Fair / Guangzuah is the place.

Travel tips to China

Sunrise View from the apartment where I stayed

Language

Language is a big problem in Guangzuah, but I understand that cities like Beijing and Shanghai are better. Taxi drivers do not understand English. The best is to have a translation application installed on your phone.

Connectivity

Connectivity is great, but there is a big China Firewall, which would block most of the sites / services that you use. Install a VPN to overcome that. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Gmail, etc does not work here unless you use a VPN

Cost of living

Yes, things are costly, especially the food and transportation.

Food

You need to be prepared to eat Chinese food. Vegans are going to have tough time. There are International brands like Starbucks, KFC, etc

Currency

Get the local currency as soon as you land as all the places, you need to pay local currency. We found that the credit cards are not accepted in many places. The popular payment system what I saw was through WeChat. WeChat is also the most popular communicating mechanism.

Locals Behaviour

People are very nice, but the only problem is language.

Hotels / Service Apartments to Stay in Guangzuah

I stayed in a service apartment on the 20th floor just besides the Pazhou river. The place was decent and I spent about less than USD 80 per day including breakfast. Check out booking.com for booking your hotels at Guangzuah.

Get Tax (VAT) refund at the Airport Customs

I had purchased some electronics from a shop from Grandview Mall where they told me that I can get the tax refund if I am traveling back soon. They filled up the necessary customs form and gave it to me to submit to the China customs which is just before the boarding.
Funny thing was the customs did not pay me in cash but they told that they can pay only through WeChat which is a payment wallet. Finally after lots of request the lady paid me in local currency from her personal cash.
