swine flu

Recently you might have heard about Swine Flu which is causing worry in many countries like Mexico, Canada, United States, etc. This was something new for me when I heard first about the outbreak. I just did some research on this and got some information.

What is Swine Flu or Swine Influenza?

According to WikiPedia

Swine influenza (also swine flu) refers to influenza caused by any virus of the family Orthomyxoviridae, that is endemic to pig (swine) populations. Strains endemic in swine are called swine influenza virus (SIV), and all known strains of SIV are classified as Influenzavirus A (common) or Influenzavirus C (rare). Influenzavirus B has not been reported in swine. All three clades, Influenzavirus A, B, and C, are endemic in humans.

Signs / Symptoms for Swine Flu

  1. Influenza like symptoms like fever, cough, body ache, fatigue, soar throat
  2. Vomiting and diarrhea in some cases

Prevention of Swine Flu

  1. Standard personal precautions against influenza
  2. Frequent washing of hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers
  3. Avoid touching their mouth, nose or eyes with their hands unless they’ve washed their hands
  4. If people do cough, they should either cough into a tissue and throw it in the garbage immediately

Treatment for Swine Flu

Antibiotics like Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses.
